There are a variety of ways to get involved with the Billings Parks and Recreation Department.  Volunteer opportunities are available for individuals or large groups.  They range from one time service engagements to ongoing volunteer commitments.  Examples of volunteer projects include mulching park trees and grooming trails to assisting with special events.

Please check our online volunteer opportunity directory for a preview of some available opportunities. Volunteer opportunities change very quickly. If you don’t see an opportunity in your areas or would like more information, please email the Community Outreach and Engagement Coordinator at millironj@billingsmt.gov to get matched with an experience that is right for you!

Volunteer Events

Refresh the Rims

The 11th Annual Refresh the Rims is scheduled for October 14th, 2023! Join Billings Parks and Recreation and Montana State University-Billings Outdoor Adventure Leadership Program, in an effort to improve one of our defining landmarks. The event begins at 9:30am with teams of volunteers fanning out throughout Swords Rimrock Park and Skyline Trail to clean up litter and debris. Cleanup will conclude by 11:30am. To get involved, sign up for one of the event cleanup locations. Volunteers will receive a t-shirt. Pre-registration is required.

Arbor Day

Join The Parks and Recreation Department for our Annual Arbor Day Celebration! Our Parks are home to over 10,000 trees. We understand the importance and benefits that trees provide to our community as a whole: providing shade, storm water management, urban temperature regulation, and increasing property values – trees have a larger impact on our everyday lives than we often recognize.

This year’s event took place at Centennial Park on May 4th and included tree planting, educational booths for 4th graders, the official Arbor Day Ceremony, and planting of the Arbor Day Tree. Stay tuned for opportunities to get involved next year when we host the event at Riverfront Park in May 2024.
